Two soldiers were killed and six others wounded on Tuesday when a Brazilian Navy helicopter crashed during an exercise in a military area in Formosa, a city some 80 kilometers from Brasilia.
“With the immediate support of the Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit, two soldiers were rescued on the spot and sent to the Armed Forces Hospital and four to the Formosa Regional Hospital. Unfortunately, two soldiers died at the time of the accident,” it reads. in a statement released by the Brazilian Navy.
The helicopter was carrying 14 crew members and was participating in an exercise in which the Navy simulated a rescue operation to respond to a serious oil tanker spill incident at sea.
“The Aeronautical Accident Investigation Commission began proceedings to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident,” added the Brazilian authorities.
