The World Bank has announced it will not consider new loans to Uganda after authorities enacted an anti-gay law earlier this year that was condemned by human rights groups.
The World Bank sent a team to Uganda after the law was enacted in May and determined that additional steps were needed to ensure projects met the bank’s environmental and social standards.
“No new public financing for Uganda will be presented to our Executive Board of Directors until the effectiveness of the additional measures has been tested,” the World Bank Group said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Our goal is to protect sexual and gender minorities from discrimination and exclusion in the projects we finance. These measures are currently being discussed with the authorities,” he added.
The legislation, which provides for the death penalty for some homosexual acts, was enacted in May.
