Archdiocese of Philadelphia pays 3.2 million euros in sexual abuse case

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia agreed to pay $3.2 million in a civil suit alleging sexual abuse of a minor by a priest, who died in 2018.

The information was put forward by the plaintiff’s lawyers. The same lawsuit alleged that church officials had known about similar reports about the priest since the 1970s.

The complainant was a 14-year-old student attending religious classes at St. Katherine of Siena, in Wayne. The assault took place in 2006, the lawyers said.

The priest died in 2018. Lawyers for the victim claimed that the Archdiocese of Philadelphia knew in the 1970s that the priest was a danger to children after another priest reported that teenagers slept in his bedroom at night. The priest was eventually placed in a different location.

“We deeply regret the pain every survivor of child sexual abuse has suffered and have a sincere desire to help victims on their journey to healing,” Kenneth A. Gavin, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, said in a statement.
