Nine people missing after factory explosion in Russia

At least nine people remain missing this Thursday after the explosion that occurred on Wednesday in a factory located near Moscow, which caused one death, the Russian Investigative Committee announced.

In a statement published on the Telegram platform, the regional section of the Investigative Committee indicates that 60 people have received medical help, nine are missing and one woman died in the hospital.

The Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations had told the AFP news agency minutes earlier that 12 people were still missing and that searches were continuing.

The explosion took place in a pyrotechnic warehouse located in the city of Sergiev Posad, located in the Moscow region, 75 kilometers northeast of the Russian capital, according to the Russian agency TASS.

Around 400 people are involved in the searches, according to information provided by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations on the Telegram platform.

Professionals investigating the explosion are searching the Piro-Ross company, as the fire broke out in its warehouse, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

“Thirty-four people were questioned as witnesses” and the company’s technical director was detained as a suspect, the investigative body added.

According to initial information, the accident occurred in a fireworks warehouse located within the Zagorsk mechanical optics factory and probably due to non-compliance with safety regulations.

At the same time, the management of the Zagorsk factory issued a statement, in which it reported that “the incident took place in a warehouse belonging to a private company.”
