North Korean president fires army chief of staff

North Korean President Kim Jong-un fired the army chief of staff and called for more war preparations, including more weapons production and more military maneuvers, local media reported today.

The announcements were made Wednesday at a meeting of the country’s Central Military Commission, North Korea’s official news agency KCNA reported today.

The North Korean leader fired Chief of Staff Pak Su-il and replaced him with Deputy Marshal Ri Yong-gil, according to KCNA, which did not provide further details on the matter.

The North Korean leader addressed the generals and showed their maps, according to footage released by state media, as he spoke of the “major military actions” against South Korea.

Last week Kim visited several arms factories for three days.

This military meeting came as Seoul and Washington prepare to conduct their major annual joint military maneuvers, which will take place at the end of August.

Pyongyang sees all these military exercises as rehearsals for an invasion and has repeatedly warned it will take “overwhelming” measures to respond to these joint maneuvers.

Kim urged “all ammunition factories to continue mass production of equipment and weapons,” adding that active military maneuvering is needed.
