During the riots sparked by the death of the young Nahel in the Parisian region of Nanterre last month, 250 schools were damaged. With a month to go before the start of the school year, schools are organizing to prepare to go back to school. Each municipality develops its own strategy.
With the shock and bewilderment of the damage caused by the riots last month, it’s time to deal with the damage. Riots in response to the death of Nahel, killed on June 27 by a police officer, have wreaked havoc across the country. In all, around 1,500 public buildings were vandalized.
In the Parisian region of Seine-et-Marne, in the town of Dammarie-lès-lys, schools are being built. In Charles Perrault’s nursery, hammers are heard clanging instead of chairs creaking. This small facility has four classrooms, a game room, and a break room, and everything needs to be renovated.
Councilor Víctor Guerard is closely following the works: “We are in the rest area where the beds were burned. We see that the false ceiling has been redone, all the electricity as well. We are going to enter the painting phase”.
Broken windows and scratched walls, the marks of the riots are still visible. The mayor wants to have everything ready for the start of the school year: “On the calendar as it stands today, we are already ahead of schedule and I can guarantee with certainty that the school will be able to open on September 4”.
Most of the furniture must be purchased. “To give you an idea, the damage to the city caused by the riots is estimated at 7 million euros. Only in schools it is 300,000 euros”, points out Victor Guerard.
According to the French Insurance Federation, the damage caused during the protests in public buildings amounts to 225 million euros.
