Biden asks Congress for more than $24 billion to help Ukraine

US President Joe Biden asked Congress on Thursday to approve more than $24 billion in aid for Ukraine and other countries economically affected by the Russian invasion in February 2022.

This is the first time the Biden administration has asked Congress to increase funding for Ukraine since Republicans seized control of the House of Representatives in January after the November 2022 midterm elections.

The request therefore serves as evidence of the support Ukraine continues to have in Congress, as some Republican Party figures, including former President Donald Trump, have questioned sending large amounts of money to Kiev.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, already said in June that any request for urgent funds for Ukraine “will not go anywhere” and warned Biden that if he wants more funds he will have to undergo a legislative debate process.

The total of 24.068 million dollars (about 21.900 million euros) includes 13.100 million dollars (11.931 million euros) to continue sending weapons to Kiev, replenishing US arms reserves and continuing to provide intelligence support.

Since the start of the war, the US has allocated 60,000 million dollars (54,651 million euros) to Ukraine, including more than 40,000 million dollars (36,434 million euros) in military support.
