Ukraine. Governor speaks of 20 dead in Russian attack on civilian caravan

Ukrainian authorities said on Saturday they had found the bodies of 20 people after an attack on a caravan of civilian cars near the northeastern city of Kupiansk.

“According to preliminary data, 20 people died in the cars… The occupiers attacked civilians trying to escape the bombing. This is cruelty that has no justification,” the governor of the Kharkiv region wrote this Saturday on the messaging website Telegram, Oleg Synegubov, quoted by France Presse news agency.

On Friday, AFP journalists witnessed the discovery of the bodies of at least 11 civilians after the withdrawal of Russian troops, who were defeated in Kupiansk. Ukrainian troops who found the wrecked cars with the bodies, in some cases burned, said they believed Russian forces attacked the civilian vehicle Aravan as it withdrew after Kupiansk’s defeat.

The bodies remained where they died, in and around the six vehicles, on a road in the village of Kyrylivka, about 70 kilometers east of Kharkov. Reports say a van has burned to the ground, carrying the charred remains of four people.

Russian forces, commanding part of northern and eastern Ukraine, have faced a Ukrainian counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region in recent weeks.
