The number of deaths in the fires that devastated the island of Maui, Hawaii, has risen to 96, according to the latest balance made, this Monday, by the authorities.
“No one knows the magnitude of the disaster,” Maui police chief John Pelletier was quoted as saying by AFP, stressing that the death toll could rise and hundreds of people are missing.
So far, it has only been possible to verify the identity of two victims and, according to the Local Police, the process will be long since genetic or dental control is required.
The Maui fires are believed to be the deadliest in the United States in over a hundred years.
Two of the three fires are still active, but the governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, has already estimated material losses at least six billion dollars (about 5,500 million euros).
