Young Italian dies after participating in WYD. will have contracted bacteria

After participating in World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, Luca Re Sartù was admitted to San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, Italy, where he would eventually die. I was 24 years old. He will have contracted a multidrug-resistant bacteria while participating in the WYD, which took place between August 1 and August 6, local media reported.

He developed a fever and felt extremely tired while still in Portugal, where he decided to stay for three days after the event. He will have been helped in the Portuguese capital, the symptoms being related to the fatigue of the days spent at WYD and the sudden change in temperature.

“Let’s assume he contracted the bacteria, staphylococci, in Lisbon. On return, Wednesday at 11:30 PM (local time, 10:30 PM in Lisbon) at Bergamo airport [Milão]he was taken to the emergency room of the Mater Domini hospital in Castellanza, where he suffered a heart attack,” said Francesco Re Sartù, the young man’s father, quoted by Prepalpina.

The father also said that the doctors “realized the seriousness of the situation” and that the Italian pilgrim was eventually transferred to another hospital, where he would eventually die.

“On Thursday morning they transferred him to the coronary ward of the hospital in Monza, but he never recovered. Until he left us on Friday afternoon,” added Francesco Re Sartù about his son, a catechist who participated in WYD with the San Luigi oratorio group.

According to the Italian press, the young man will have contracted an infection, via the bacteria staphylococci, which progressed to septicemia, which can lead to organ failure. The family is now awaiting the results of the autopsy.
