Biden visits Hawaii on Monday after devastating wildfires

United States President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will travel to the island of Maui in Hawaii next Monday to visit the region of that archipelago devastated by fires that have left more than 100 dead. people.

The US president “will meet with aid workers, survivors and officials,” his spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

Biden wants to personally assess “the impact of the fires” and talk about “next steps” in rescue operations. The Democratic president is leading “a whole-government response” at the federal level and is “committed to providing the people of Hawaii with everything they need,” his spokesman said.

The White House believes search operations will reach a level next week that will allow for a presidential visit, mobilizing important logistical and security resources.

Biden declared Hawaii a state of natural disaster, allowing emergency resources to be mobilized, and liaised with state governor Josh Green.

The Republican opposition considers its response to the fires inadequate, the deadliest in more than a century in the United States.

The US president mentioned the fires succinctly last Thursday, but did not do so when the number of victims increased exponentially last weekend.
