Together for Catalonia and PSOE with principle of agreement

Together for Catalonia and the PSOE, this Thursday reached an agreement in principle with the PSOE with a view to electing the socialist candidate Francina Armengol as president of the Congress.

The agreement, according to the newspaper El País, has to do with the use of Catalan in the Cortes and with an investigation into espionage by independents. Negotiations continue on another point, which is still blocked.

The election of the Bureau of Congress and the Presidium of Congress (the Spanish parliament) will serve as a test of the possibility of forming a new left-wing government.

The PSOE this week nominated Francina Armengol as Congress President, who in order to be elected will need the support of the same parties with which the Socialists and Somar are negotiating the parliamentary ‘fuss’.

If Francina Armengol does not receive the necessary support, the presidency of the parliament could fall to the PP candidate Cuca Gamarra by a simple majority (more votes in favor than against).

Spain’s People’s Party president Alberto Núñez Feijóo insisted on Wednesday that he won the July 23 elections and must therefore rule, adding that the alternative is a “gimmick” that does not guarantee stability and governance.

“We have a responsibility to provide Spain with a government that governs. And that governs from the first moment, not that it resists for a few years,” Feijóo said during a meeting with deputies and senators elected by the PP (right) in the parliamentary elections of July 23, which the party won, but without an absolute majority alone or with the far-right VOX, with which it governs in coalition in four Spanish autonomous regions.

The Socialist Party (PSOE) was the second most voted and has more parliamentary allies, so at the moment it seems to have more options to form a government, working with the Somar platform (extreme left) and with the parliamentary support of regionalists, nationalist and political forces separatists.
