The PSOE secures the presidency of Congress and takes an important step towards the investiture

First tug of war between Pedro Sánchez and Alberto Nuñez Feijóo, first victory for the socialist. The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) has won the presidency of Congress after reaching an agreement with Junts per Catalunya, the party of the fugitive Carles Puigdemont, this Thursday morning.

The independentistas reached an agreement with the PSOE for the use of Catalan in Congress, the creation of a commission of investigation into the case of spying on Catalan leaders during the independence process and to advance in the dejudicialization of the Catalan conflict.

The Socialists thus guarantee, with an absolute majority, the presidency of Congress to Francina Armengol, former president of the Balearic Islands, a Catalan-speaking politician, and defender of the territorial and cultural diversity of Spain. She is a profile that the Catalan parties like and whose choice by the PSOE was not accidental.

With this result, Sánchez takes an important step towards the formation of a Government, since this agreement could open the door to his investiture. The lack of support from the Popular Party was also evident, whose candidate, Cuca Gamarra, only got the votes in favor of her party and two others -União do Povo Navarro and Coligação Canária-, since the far-right deputies The Vox party did not voted for the PP candidate.

In recent days, Pedro Sánchez reminded Feijóo that he does not have enough votes to invest and accused him of putting pressure on the head of state.

“We are going to ask those who call themselves constitutionalists to respect article 99 of our Constitution. Let them show that they are capable of understanding and respecting our parliamentary system, accepting something as basic and as legitimate as that in Spain whoever has the most support governs”. Because this is not the time, it never was, neither for pressure on the Head of State, nor for magical cabals,” said Sánchez.

Next Monday, King Felipe VI begins the round of consultations with the parties to decide which candidate should try to form a government. Alberto Nuñez Feijóo has already announced that, as the winning candidate in the elections, he wants to stand for the investiture even though he does not have support to do so. But taking into account the support obtained by Pedro Sánchez, the king could choose to entrust the formation of the Government to the socialist.
