The Italian sociologist, journalist and writer Francesco Alberoni has died at the age of 93, his family told ANSA.

Known as a sociologist of love, he was admitted to an outpatient clinic in Milan to combat a complication that occurred during the treatment of kidney problems.

A versatile figure and one of the leading names in the social sciences in Italy, Alberoni was born on December 31, 1929 in Piacenza and graduated in medicine from the University of Pavia, specializing in psychology and sociology, with a focus on studies of collective movements and love processes.

The first essay on the theme of love, budding state (1968), later became the work Movement and setting (1977), which would become one of his most famous publications.

His most important works have been published in several countries. being among them The powerless elite (1963), Consumption and Society (1964), Italy in transformation (1976), fall in love and fall in love (1979), The reasons for good and evil (1981), The friendship (1984) and The eroticism (1986).

He was also a professor of sociology at the University of Milan, where he dealt with topics such as mass communication, migration phenomena of political participation in Italy, and was also rector of the University of Trento between 1968 and 1970.

At the same time, he was on the board of directors of the broadcaster Rai in 2005 and was a columnist for the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera between 1982 and 2011.
