The French government met this Thursday urgently to discuss precautionary measures, at a time when the country is preparing to face one of the biggest heat waves in history.
For Thursday, the authorities put 12 districts in the Lyon region on orange alert, with forecast temperatures above 30°C. Thermometers should only start to drop from “the end of next week”, the French organization Météo-France said, quoted by AFP.

In France, periods of heat waves in the second half of August are rare, having only occurred six times so far. Meteorologists warn that the 2012 record may be exceeded, forecasting that the average temperature registered in the national thermal indicator will exceed 27 °C in the coming days.
