More than 200 soldiers participate in the fight against an out-of-control forest fire on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, Spain, which has already consumed an area equivalent to more than 3,000 soccer fields.
The fire, which has already burned 3,273 hectares of forest in eight municipalities, recently forced the evacuation of the towns of El Sauzal and Santa Úrsula from their homes. Some four thousand people are confined in the town of La Esperanza.
The military have been active, above all, in the defense of scattered houses in the areas of Pista del Rayo and La Esperanza and with reconnaissance flights, according to the Spanish Ministry of Defense.
Although the fire is still out of control, some lines of defense activated in combat work are beginning to show results, according to the President of the Government of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.
