Russian President Vladimir Putin met this Saturday in Rostov-on-Don, in southern Russia, with the generals in charge of the military operation in Ukraine, in which Russian troops have advanced on the northeastern front in recent weeks.
“The head of state listened to the reports from the Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov, the sector commanders and other officials,” a Kremlin statement said.
According to the Kremlin, Putin traveled this Saturday to the Rostov-on-Don region, in the south of the country, to hear a briefing from the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Valeri Gerasimov, who has been widely criticized by some sectors for the lack of victories in Ukraine.
Putin was also informed by other commanders and officers of units fighting in what is known in Russia as a “special military operation”, according to the official statement.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported this Saturday, in its morning briefing, on the aerial bombardments against enemy positions in the eastern Donetsk region.
He accused Kiev of launching a new attack against the annexed Crimean peninsula with an S-200 surface-to-air missile, which was shot down by Russian batteries.
The only successes achieved in recent weeks by the Russian Army were in the Kupiansk area, a city in the northeastern region of Kharkov, a situation that was recognized by kyiv.
At the same time, Russian forces had to withdraw from several cities in Donetsk and the southern Zaporizhia region, the epicenter of the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Since the start of the counteroffensive on June 4, Putin has stated that it has been a total failure for kyiv, which has lost tens of thousands of troops in its attempt to advance towards the Sea of Azov.
Gerasimov and the Russian Defense Minister, Sergey Shoigu, remain in their posts, despite the fact that the head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, asked for his head after, at the end of June, they staged an armed rebellion in which his mercenaries took the city of Rostov-on-Don.
