Moscow estimates Western aid to Kiev at 160 billion

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov estimated more than $160 billion (about $147 billion) in aid from Western countries to Ukraine since the start of the war just over a year and a half ago.

Lavrov explained that that total includes $75 billion (about $69 billion) in US military aid.

“According to estimates by Washington-based non-governmental organization The Heritage Foundation, the United States has already contributed nearly $113 billion (about €104 billion) to Ukraine,” he added.

The United States sends large-scale weapons to Ukraine, including cluster munitions and long-range munitions, and is involved in planning the Ukrainian military’s operations, Lavrov added in an interview with International Affairs magazine.

Despite all the economic and military tools the United States has offered Ukraine, Moscow’s head of diplomacy recalled that “historically” Washington cannot boast of the effectiveness of its aid to third countries, citing the example of South Africa. Vietnam in 1973 and, more recently, Ashraf Ghani’s Afghanistan, which fell to the Taliban in 2021.

Lavrov claimed that the reason for this unconditional support for Ukraine by Western countries hides the interests of Washington and Brussels to “knock out” Russia as a serious geopolitical rival. “That’s why they unleashed a hybrid war against us,” he argued.
