Russia resumes gas supply to Italy

Russia will resume gas supplies to Italy after being suspended due to a transportation problem in Austria, Gazprom said in a statement on Wednesday. “Transport of Russian gas through Austrian territory is resumed,” Gazprom said, adding that a “solution” had been found with Italian buyers following regulatory changes in Austria.

Most of the Russian gas supplied to Italy goes via Ukraine via the Trans Austria Gas Pipeline (TAG) to Tarvisio, in northern Italy, on the border with Austria. Italian energy company Eni said on Wednesday that “Gazprom’s gas supply has resumed today” and welcomed the “resolution from Eni and interested parties on the restrictions stemming from the new regulations introduced by Austria”.

Gazprom suspended gas deliveries to Italy on Saturday, blaming a transportation problem in Austria. “The reason has to do with the regulatory changes that took place in Austria at the end of September,” Gazprom said at the time. In Austria, regulator E-Control said the new rules, which came into effect on Saturday, “had been known to all market players for months” and hoped that “everyone would comply and take the necessary measures to comply with their regulations.” “.

The issues were related to “contractual details” related to the transit of gas to Italy, E-Control said on Twitter.

Eni said Monday it was willing to pay a €20 million guarantee to resume supplies of Russian gas via Austria. After Wednesday’s announcement, AFP asked Eni whether such a payment had been made, but received no response. Before the conflict in Ukraine, Italy imported 95% of the gas it consumes, of which about 45% came from Russia.
