Last night went better than expected for the work to extinguish the forest fire in Tenerife and the weather conditions were not so unfavorable, the Rescue and Emergency Center of the Canary Islands reported on Sunday.
Emergency services expected a “very complicated” night after Saturday, with high temperatures, gusty winds and low humidity in the 70-kilometer perimeter of the fire, making it difficult to fight the flames and facilitating the fire’s advance. , especially in the northern part of the island.
The forest fire is spreading over 10 municipalities, although evacuations were carried out in 11 municipalities, covering an area of 8,398 hectares in a radius of 70 kilometers. The number of people evacuated was updated to 12,279, with data provided by police and municipal councils outside the census, a number lower than the 26,000 initially projected, which matched preliminary estimates.
During the night, 343 people worked on the ground, including 150 firefighters who, along with the Military Aid Unit, were responsible for protecting property and homes in the evacuated areas.
In the early hours of the morning, 23 air forces were involved in fighting the fire, five of which were seaplanes.
