Zelensky lands at Eindhoven airbase to discuss the deployment of F-16 fighter jets

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky landed at the Eindhoven airbase on Sunday for a visit to the Netherlands, the second this year. The shipment of Dutch F-16 fighters is high on the agenda.

Zelensky landed around 12:00 (10:00 in Lisbon), a spokeswoman for the Dutch government told AFP, after the Ukrainian head of state had been in Sweden on Saturday to discuss aspects of military cooperation with Ukraine in the war against Russia.

“We will discuss with the head of government the supply of F-16s to Ukraine to protect our population from Russian terror,” Zelensky wrote in a message on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter.

After visiting The Hague on May 4, Zelensky will meet outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

The visit was kept secret until landing for security reasons. The meeting will take place at the Eindhoven airbase and will focus on good mutual relations. The delivery of Dutch F-16 fighters to Ukraine will also be discussed.

This week, the United States gave the green light to send F-16 fighter jets from the Netherlands and Denmark, a decision the Ukrainian government called “big news.”

The US State Department, which is responsible for the country’s foreign policy, said on Friday that the Netherlands and Denmark have received “formal guarantees” to send the fighters as soon as the training of the first group of pilots for F- is completed. 16.
