A Senegalese military plane arrived on the island of Sal, in Cape Verde, for the repatriation of the 38 people found on August 14 in a drifting boat in the coming days, the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) announced this Sunday. .
“There is already a plane, from a Senegalese military base, on the island of Sal, for their repatriation, with a trip scheduled for this week,” the PGR announced in a statement.
The migrants were heard “at trial on August 17” and “after being questioned” they were sent to “a temporary center” where they received food and medical support, to later guarantee “their expulsion from the national territory,” the note added.
A pirogue set out on July 10 with 101 people from a coastal community in northern Senegal with the aim of reaching Europe via the Canary Islands, but 56 are missing, survivors report they died of starvation and the bodies had to be removed. the water after being lost at sea for a month.
Seven other bodies were recovered, along with the 38 survivors.
The drifting pirogue was found by a Spanish fishing boat off the island of Sal, where they were transported.
The case is one of the latest in a wave of attempts to cross the Atlantic from the West African coast.
