Borrell recognizes peace summit on Ukrainian territory at the end of September

The head of European diplomacy this Monday raised the existence of “work in progress” to hold a possible summit on peace in Ukraine in September, in the UN General Assembly high-level week. Ukrainian territory.

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Political Security Policy, Josep Borrell revealed that “work is underway” for a “high level” meeting on peace in Ukraine.

According to the head of community diplomacy, this summit on peace on Ukrainian soil was “probably” to take place during the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly at the end of September.

The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly will begin on September 5, while the high-level meetings will take place between September 19 and 29.

These statements from Borrell come after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this month that he hoped a peace summit would be held in Ukraine in the fall, following talks in Saudi Arabia that he described as a step towards that goal. .

According to Josep Borrell, the intention is to hold this peace summit precisely after that meeting that took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at the beginning of August, with the participation of more than 40 countries, including China, and which was “almost a step by Ukraine to international community to put pressure on Russia to end the war”.

“Only Russia can stop, it was Russia that started and it is Russia that must end,” said the European official, guaranteeing that the EU will “continue to support Ukraine”.

When Josep Borrell was questioned at the time about sending F-16 fighters to Ukraine, after it became known that Denmark and the Netherlands were going to take that step, Josep Borrell indicated that such mobilization does not result from an agreement at European level, representing before “bilateral consultation”. decisions of different countries forming a group to coordinate their action”.

However, according to the High Representative, the EU will “definitely” finance a “part” of the costs, if requested by the promoting countries.

Josep Borrell said he was still convinced that these F-16s “could be useful”.

On Sunday, Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the Netherlands and Denmark would send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, which will be delivered if certain conditions are met.
