Eight people were found dead after torrential rain overtook a group of people while touring Moscow’s sewer system. An undetermined number of people are still missing.
According to TASS news agency, the water level in the sewage system rose rapidly after torrential rain, preventing victims from escaping to the surface. ‘The deaths of eight participants in the illegal tour have been confirmed’the emergency services said.
A video shared on social media showed researchers investigating a water drainage channel in the Russian capital, while some divers searched the Moskva River.
Several tour operators offer tours to the myriad of tunnels in Moscow’s sewer system, some of which were built in the 19th century, though it’s not clear whether all visits are permitted by the authorities.
Daniil Davydov, described as an “urban explorer”, told the RIA news agency that there were shelters in the tunnel where people could escape, but no one was found. “I was hoping they might find some survivors. There are two shelters, but no one was there,” he said.
The police opened a criminal investigation into the organizer of the visit.
