The court in The Hague will hear Russia in September about the case brought by Kiev

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hear Russia’s objections in September in the process launched by Ukraine shortly after the invasion of its country by troops from Moscow began on February 24, 2022.

Ukraine, which appealed to the UN Supreme Court shortly after the offensive began by Russian forces, accuses Russia of improperly using accusations of genocide in eastern Ukraine to justify its invasion, and that it neighboring country itself was a genocide plant.

In March 2022, ICJ judges urgently ordered Russia to suspend its ongoing military operations in Ukraine.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the court in The Hague said it “will hold public hearings on the Russian Federation’s preliminary objections”.

Russia will present its objections on September 18, and Ukraine will elaborate its arguments the following day.

Two days later, 32 countries, all of which are Western allies of Ukraine, will be able to intervene.

In June, the International Court of Justice authorized the 32 countries to intervene in this case along with Ukraine.

However, the court rejected the US request.

Interventions by the allies have focused primarily on the International Court of Justice’s jurisdiction over the matter; a court ruling can take months or even years.

A second presentation of arguments will take place on 25 and 27 September.

Kiev accused Russia of referring to the UN convention on genocide when it said at the start of the war that it had invaded Ukraine to end what it said was genocide in the pro-Russian regions of eastern Ukraine .

Moscow has already avoided the hearings, saying in a written statement that the International Court of Justice has no jurisdiction in the case because Kiev’s claim falls outside the scope of the 1948 Genocide Convention.

The International Court of Justice order calling on Russia to suspend its offensive was only a provisional decision, pending a decision on whether it falls within its jurisdiction.

The ICJ was established after World War II to resolve disputes between UN member states.

Its decisions are binding, but they do not have the means to implement them.
