Kiev announces the destruction of the Russian missile system in Crimea

This was announced by the Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR) on Wednesday destruction of a Russian medium- and long-range S-400 missile system on the Crimean peninsulaafter “An explosion”.

The explosion happened “near the village of Olenivka on Cape Tarkhankut in the temporarily occupied Crimea”says the GUR in a statement quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE.

“As a result of the explosion, the installation itself, the missiles installed in it and the personnel were completely destroyed,” he said.

The intelligence services of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine have not specified the origin of the explosion.

The announcement was accompanied by a video released on social networks showing an explosion.

“Given the limited number of such complexes in the enemy’s arsenal, this is a painful blow to the occupier’s air defense system, which will have a serious impact on future events in occupied Crimea,” the GUR added.

The latter statement, according to EFE, points to an intensification of attacks with ‘drones’ (devices without crew) on the military infrastructure in Crimea.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has stepped up attacks on ports, airports and other strategic military installations within the Russian Federation or in occupied territories such as Crimea.

The Ukrainian military and intelligence services developed “drones” for air and naval strikes that enabled them to reach targets that Kyiv’s forces were unable to reach in earlier stages of the war.

Information released by Ukraine and Russia about the course of the war cannot immediately be independently verified.

Russia invaded and annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

After the February 24, 2022 invasion, Moscow also declared the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporijia as annexed.

Ukraine and the wider international community do not recognize the sovereignty of the Russian Federation in the five annexed regions.

Kiev is demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, and the restoration of the borders defined in 1991, when the country gained independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union, of which it was a part.
