“It’s more a matter of generic prevention and precaution,” he added.
The head of state explained that two alerts were given, one at the beginning of the summit and another at the end, and that the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, commented that “there was a missile on the way.”
Asked about the possibility of inviting Zelensky to visit Portugal, Marcelo admits that he would “very much like there to be an opportunity for it”, but stresses that it is still “premature” and that the Ukrainian president “has a very busy schedule”. , especially since he “likes to be on the front line”.
On the other hand, the President of the Republic does not hide his admiration for his Ukrainian counterpart: “He has an unusual power of intervention (…) He has been friendly from the moment he was elected.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived this Wednesday in the Ukrainian capital. The Head of State traveled by train from Poland and arrived at the kyiv station at 5:30 a.m. (Portuguese time).
