Marcelo’s trip to Ukraine shows that “political leaders are no longer riding on public opinion”

The visit of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to Ukraine “is important to show the solidarity of Portugal” and “political leaders no longer take advantage of public opinion”, they considered this Wednesday, in statements to the TSFthe diplomat Martins da Cruz and the division general Arnaut Moreira.

“It is a visibility factor for the Ukrainian cause, which will surely be highly appreciated by the President [Volodymyr Zelensky] and by political and military officials in Ukraine,” said Martins da Cruz.

Arnauto Moreira, for his part, affirms that “the outcome of the war in Ukraine is not indifferent to Europe” and, therefore, he hopes that political leaders “know how to explain to public opinion what is really at stake and the importance that has”. will have in the future of Europe the final solution found for the war”.

Asked about the possibility of reaching a peace agreement, Martins da Cruz and Arnaut Moreira present different perspectives.

If for the diplomat the upcoming elections in the United States can help to reach an understanding, for the major general, as long as Russia and Ukraine continue to face the fight for the territories as an advantage in the negotiations, the agreement will be difficult.

“When autumn/winter begins and there are no more conditions for the so-called Ukrainian counteroffensive, the election campaign is approaching in the United States as well, that is, at the end of the year. This means that, as the war in Ukraine progresses, it will be part of the American electoral campaign, so perhaps the Americans are the first interested in starting negotiations that can lead to a one-on-one peace,” said Martins da Cruz.

“It does not seem to me that there are conditions to find a political solution to the conflict”, contradicts Arnaut Moreira.

Martins da Cruz also commented on the diplomatic strategy adopted by Zelensky, stressing that the Ukrainian president’s goal is not to let support for the country fade away: “Remember that Ukraine continues to need help and more and more.”
