Russia said on Thursday it had shot down a Ukrainian missile targeting “civilian targets” in the Kaluga region, as well as “several drones” off the coast of Crimea.
An attempted attack by Kiev on “civilian targets on the territory of the Russian Federation has been thwarted,” the defense ministry said on the Telegram messaging platform.
“The missile was detected and destroyed by air defense systems over the territory of the Kaluga region”southwest of the Russian capital, the same source added.
Russia’s state news agency TASS also reported, citing air services sources, that the international airports of Moscow, Vnukovo and Domodedovo were closed to air traffic at dawn.
The Kaluga region borders Moscow, which has been targeted several times by Ukrainian drones in recent days, Russian officials said.
The Russian government in annexed Crimea said this morning it had shot down drones from the peninsula.
“According to preliminary data, several drones over the sea in the Cape Chersonesos area have been destroyed”said Governor Mikhail Razvoyaev.
On Thursday, Kiev announced it had conducted a rare operation in Crimea annexed by Russia and raised the Ukrainian flag, a symbolic success on Ukraine’s Independence Day in this bastion considered impregnable by Moscow.
