“Anger, worry, and discomfort.” What Does Trump’s Unprecedented “Mugshot” Reveal?

It is an unpublished photograph. Donald Trump is the first former president of the United States of America to have a “mugshot”, that is, a photograph taken by the police for a criminal case. Trump turned himself in Thursday but was released 20 minutes later on $200,000 bail. The photograph was taken at Fulton Prison in Atlanta, Georgia.

From a quick glance at the “mugshot” it’s clear that Donald Trump is angry but, challenged by the TSFthe director of the Laboratory of Facial Expression of Emotion at the Fernando Pessoa University analyzes the image with a magnifying glass.

“We were able to clearly verify in the upper part of the face that the former president of the United States is angry, very angry, and it can be seen through the contraction of the forehead, in the glabella area, with the appearance of vertical lines.” between the eyebrows and elevation of the upper eyelids. It is noticeable that there is an attempt to try to control, to rest the photograph, however, it must also be considered that he is worried and, at the same time, he shows aversion for the place where he was, that is, he did not feel comfortable for the simple fact of being photographed in that situation and circumstance”, he explains to TSF Armindo Freitas Magalhaes.

The researcher also warns of the strength and power of such an image, which can be used as a “propaganda mechanism”.

“The angry facial expression functions as a demonstration of power, that is, of combat, of reaction to a situation that may be adverse and, in this case, the image consultancy of the former president of the United States uses this image as a form of of the catapult before public opinion”, he considers, stressing that photography is also “dangerous, in the sense that, due to the facial expression of anger, it can move masses”.

“It can be very effective as a propaganda device, in the sense that, being where you are, which is to say, in a prison, and being the first time that this has happened to a former president of the United States, you can push the idea that it is possible to achieve some purposes through the exposure of this image,” he adds.

In addition to fingerprints and photographs, the former head of state also had his height and weight recorded.

After being released, Donald Trump used the social network X (formerly Twitter), for the first time since 2021, to publish the photograph taken in prison.

The former head of state has not published a message on what was his preferred social network since January 2021, when Twitter suspended the politician’s account indefinitely, a few days after the attack on the US Congress, committed by his followers.

Trump posted the photo and wrote: “Election interference. Never give up!”, along with a link to his website.

The former head of state’s account was reinstated in November, shortly after Elon Musk took control of the company.

The Fulton County indictment is the fourth criminal case against Trump since March, when he became the first former president in US history to be impeached.

Trump’s surrender, which comes amid an abrupt change in his legal team, follows the presidential debate in Milwaukee the night before, with his main rivals for the 2024 Republican nomination, a race in which he remains the leading candidate, despite the buildup of his legal power. issues.

The surrender in Atlanta – a city in Georgia – differs notably from the previous three, since it took place at night and required the former president to surrender himself in a prison in conflict – instead of in a court – all in the heart of a vital state. for the 2024 presidential elections.

Several defendants in the case have already gone through this process, including former Trump lawyer and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who appeared in prison on Wednesday.

Donald Trump is one of 19 people charged in Georgia with trying to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which the Republican lost to incumbent Democrat Joe Biden by a narrow margin.

This criminal indictment stemmed from a phone call, dating back to January 2021, when the former president asked Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to get him enough votes to win the state.
