Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) announced on Friday that it has opened an investigation into the deaths of 88 people in the country who purchased drugs to facilitate suicide on Canadian websites.
“The NCA has taken the decision to launch an investigation into possible criminal offenses committed in Britain. This operation is still ongoing,” said NCA Deputy Director Craig Turner.
The law enforcement agency, dubbed the UK FBI, added that “there is no confirmed link between items purchased on the websites and the cause of death in any of these cases at this early stage”.
The announcement comes after Canadian Kenneth Law, 57, was arrested in Ontario and charged with two counts of counseling and assisted suicide.
The Canadian is accused of selling a deadly drug to people around the world, with British media reporting he sent 1,200 packages to 40 countries.
Police in the United States, Italy, Australia and New Zealand are also investigating Kenneth Law’s actions.
