Small plane pilot threatens to crash in US store

US police said on Saturday that the pilot of a small plane flying over Tupelo, Mississippi, threatened to crash the plane into a Walmart store.

A statement from Tupelo police said the pilot of a plane flying over the city had contacted emergency services and “deliberately threatened to collide with Walmart on West Main”.

The statement added that police evacuated the sprawling store and a neighboring store “and scattered the people as much as possible”.

Police contacted the pilot, the statement said, but did not provide any information about his identity or his motives. The pilot called 911 around 5 a.m., police said.

A map from the FlightAware website showed what appeared to be the plane’s path — a jagged zigzag pattern centered on Tupelo, a city of about 40,000.

But the police statement warned that “with the mobility of an aircraft of this type, the danger zone is much greater.”

Police said the aircraft appeared to be a “King Air-type”, a utility aircraft built by Beechcraft, usually with a capacity of six or seven passengers.
