Greece registers 122 fires and they are revived on the main fronts

A total of 122 fires remain active this Saturday in Greece, 75 of them in the last 24 hours, with flare-ups in the three main sources and with evacuations from municipalities in the Evros region.

Civil Protection asked the residents of the municipalities of Atarni and Plaka to withdraw to the city of Alexandroupolis.

In the Evros region, more than 73,000 hectares burned on Saturday, 13,000 in the Dadia national park, where another 5,000 already burned last year, according to the Kathimerini newspaper.

Outbreaks have also occurred in Parnitha, another natural area north of Athens.

In these two regions the situation seemed under control from the early hours of the day.

This morning six fires broke out almost simultaneously in the southwest of Athens caused by a thunderstorm, Kathimerini reported.

Another fire caused by lightning occurred on the island of Andros, in the Cyclades archipelago.

As of Sunday, the risk of fire remains high in many areas of the country and firefighters remain on alert.

This summer’s fires in Greece were the worst in Europe on record, according to the European Union.

In total, it is estimated that so far this year the equivalent of 1.09% of the surface of Greece has been burned, a percentage much higher than the average of 0.33% for the period 2006 to 2022.

At least 21 people have died from the fires since last Saturday, 18 of them irregular immigrants who were found charred in Dadia.
