One person was killed and four wounded in a shooting on Saturday in a Copenhagen neighborhood known for its countercultural atmosphere and thriving hashish trade, according to local police.
Two masked men shot inside a building in the Chiristiana neighborhood, Copenhagen police spokesman Paul Kjeldsen said in statements to local media, quoted by the Associated Press agency.
One of the injured is in critical but stable condition, and the others have minor injuries, according to the same source.
Authorities believe the shooting may be related to gang activity.
Christiana, also known as the Free City of Christiania, has been an independent, self-governing community since the 1970s, when “hippies” began occupying a former naval base.
The hashish trade was tolerated by the authorities until 2004, when the police began to crack down on the sale of drugs.
Still, the sale of hashish continued, with occasional episodes of gang-related violence.
