US military plane crashes in Australia with 20 people on board

A US military plane crashed this Sunday with about twenty people on board during military exercises in northern Australia, according to local media reports.

Three US Marines were killed on Sunday when the military plane they were traveling in crashed on a remote tropical island off the Australian mainland, an official Navy source said.

“There were a total of 23 people on board. Three died and another five, injured and in serious condition, were taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital,” the official said in a statement.

Several people were rescued after the plane crashed near the Tiwi Islands north of Darwin, according to Australian public broadcaster ABC.

The emergency services of the Northern Territory reported an “air crash” on Melville Island, about 60 kilometers north of the Australian mainland.

The Osprey, a hybrid horizontal or vertical takeoff aircraft, was taking part in the Predators Run exercises, a series of military exercises organized jointly by the US and Australian armed forces.

In 2017, an MV-22 Osprey crashed into the sea as part of a US-Australian military exercise, killing three people.
