At least four migrants died and 19 others were rescued alive and transferred to the port of Mytilene after the boat they were traveling on capsized near the island of Lesbos, Greece, according to public radio and television ERT.
The vessel was three nautical miles from Turkish territorial waters.
However, the Turkish authorities, despite having been informed, did not respond, so the Greek coast guard carried out the rescue, ERT indicates.
Meanwhile, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Alarm Phone, which specializes in helping immigrants and refugees, criticized the Greek authorities for their inaction.
“One of these ships had already contacted [domingo] in the morning to the Alarm Phone and alerted the authorities, but they did not react, not even to calls from one of the merchant ships that was preparing to rescue people,” the NGO stated in a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
