Covid-19: Macau removes the latest measure imposed due to the pandemic

Macao ends the last measure in force in the territory due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a mandatory test for people from abroad who intend to enter China.

The New Type of Coronavirus Contingency Coordination Center stated that the measure will be suspended as of Wednesday midnight (3:00 p.m. Tuesday in Lisbon), according to a statement released on Monday.

Until now, everyone who had been abroad in the past seven days had to undergo a Covid-19 test in order to enter mainland China from Macao.

The center, which is under the supervision of the Health Services, said the decision was made “in response to the adjustment of quarantine measures on entry” in mainland China.

In the same note, the authorities stressed that it will no longer be necessary to submit a negative novel coronavirus test result to travel to China and that, as such, Macao will also eliminate the manual process at the border crossing.

Hours earlier, the spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced that the country will no longer require a negative Covid-19 test from travelers arriving from abroad as of Wednesday.

The measure includes both antigen and nucleic acid tests, Wang Wenbin said.

Macao, which, like China, followed the ‘Covid zero’ policy, announced in December the cancellation of most prevention and containment measures, after almost three years of strict restrictions.

In early January, the Macao authorities announced the reopening of the borders to foreigners without resident status, ending a measure implemented in March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic.
