A magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Bali led to the withdrawal of tourists

A strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake followed by aftershocks shook Bali and other Indonesian islands on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has indicated, causing tourists to retreat but without causing major damage.

The earthquake occurred at a great depth, about 515 kilometers, in the sea, northeast of Bali, at 03:55 (Monday 20:55 in Lisbon), the institute said, ruling out the risk of a tsunami.

The tremors were felt throughout the island of Bali, as well as the neighboring islands of Lombok and Sumbawa.

Two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.4 and 5.6 were also recorded by the USGS.

Hotels evacuated guests and staff guarded the beaches, fearing a possible tsunami.

Authorities have not reported any direct damage.

“Our teams are assessing the situation and collecting information from residents,” Indonesia’s disaster management agency said. in a statement.

Indonesia regularly experiences seismic and volcanic activity because it lies on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

On November 21, more than 600 people were killed by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake that struck the province of West Java.

On December 26, 2004, an earthquake near Sumatra in western Indonesia killed more than 230,000 people, even in Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. With a magnitude of 9.1, it caused huge waves, up to 30 meters high, off the coast of Banda Aceh, in northern Sumatra.
