Russian head of state Vladimir Putin will be absent from Yevgueni Prigozhin’s funeral, which could take place Tuesday or Wednesday at Serafimovskoe cemetery in St Petersburg.
“The presence of the president is not foreseen,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a news conference on Tuesday.
Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said: Prigozhin’s family is responsible for “everything related to funeral ceremonies”.
On August 24, Vladimir Putin said that the former leader of the Wagner group had died and sent his condolences to the family of the oligarch who ran the mercenary company.
According to the official Russian version, Prigozhin died this month after the plane he was traveling in crashed over Russia, which had eight other occupants.
The men hired by the Wagner Company have been fighting since 2021 in Ukraine and in Syria, but also in various parts of the African continent.
