Volodymyr Zelensky enjoyed hearing Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa speak in Ukrainian and believes that despite “some accent”, the Portuguese president behaved well in the speech delivered during Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations in Kiev.
“It didn’t surprise me, I really liked it,” the Ukrainian president assured in an interview with RTP’s special envoy, Cândida Pinto, which will be broadcast in full on RTP1 on Tuesday night, after Telejornal.
Zelensky took the opportunity to praise Marcelo: “The president is a person of great charisma and he feels the voice of the people. Not only of his people, as we felt and saw, but also of our people,” he stressed . “That was very important. To be, as the musicians say, in harmony. In harmony with ordinary people. So this way we will achieve everything,” Zelensky added.
As for Marcelo’s Ukrainian language skills, Zelensky sees some potential. “On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Mr. Ukrainian tried to speak Ukrainian and it wasn’t bad. He had an accent, but I think it’s only a matter of time,” said Ukraine’s head of state.
“In any case, it means respect for Ukraine from him and we appreciate that very much,” he underlined.
