Ukraine’s energy company Naftogaz announced on Tuesday the discovery, in an unspecified area, of new natural gas reserves that could reach 1 billion cubic meters and allow the country to become independent of supplies from Russia.
“The discovery of new resources could enable the country to make progress towards total energy independence from Russia,” Ukrainian company Naftogaz clarified in a statement.
The geological information obtained indicates that “the reserves of this new field could reach one billion cubic meters of gas,” the company’s statement reads, referring to the conclusions drawn from the prospecting process, for which drilling was carried out. at a depth of more than 4,000 meters.
And he continues: ‘By increasing the reserves, we create prospects for sustainable growth for gas productions,” says Oleg Tomachev, director general of UkrGazVydobuvannya, the Naftogaz branch that conducted the drilling operation.
The statement recalled that Naftogaz recently commissioned two natural gas wells, capable of extracting more than 430,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day.
Ukraine has been trying since 2014 to stop importing gas from Russia, either directly or through intermediaries.
The gas supply has been one of Russia’s most effective ways of influencing Ukraine since the country declared independence in 1991.
