Russia says situation in Gabon “is of deep concern”

Russia declared this Wednesday that it is following the course of the coup carried out by the military against the president of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, and that the situation is cause for deep concern.

“The situation in Gabon is cause for deep concern. We are closely following what is happening” in that country, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said during his daily press conference in Moscow.

However, Peskov refused to draw “general conclusions” about the increase in instability in Africa as a result of the latest coups that took place on the continent, specifically in July in Niger.

The military leading the coup announced today, through the public television channel, that the Gabonese president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, is under house arrest.

The statement, broadcast by Gabon 24, adds that other government officials were arrested on various charges. One of Ali Bongo’s sons is also detained, the coup military announced.

The coup took place today, after the electoral results were announced, according to which Ondimba would remain in power, continuing 55 years in the power of his family.

The coup leaders announced, also on public television, the cancellation of the presidential elections that re-elected President Ali Bongo Ondimba on Saturday and the dissolution of all democratic institutions.
