The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs stated on Wednesday that the eventual confirmation of the coup in Gabon “will increase instability throughout the region” of central Africa.
“The news is confusing. I received the news in the morning. If it is confirmed, it will be another military coup that will increase instability throughout the region”, declared Josep Borrell, upon arriving at the meeting of EU Defense Ministers, which is held in Toledo, Spain.
Borrell confirmed that the situation in sub-Saharan Africa “is not exactly improving” given the news he has received about Gabon.
Asked about the reaction of the European Union if the military coup in Gabon is confirmed, the head of EU diplomacy responded with “we’ll see.”
“It is difficult to anticipate what the ministers will say” about Gabon during the meeting that will take place in Toledo, Borrell assessed.
A group of Gabonese soldiers announced on television today the cancellation of the presidential elections that re-elected President Ali Bongo Ondimba on Saturday and the dissolution of all democratic institutions.
The announcement was made in a press release read on Gabon 24, a television channel owned by the country’s Presidency, by a dozen Gabonese soldiers.
This announcement of the seizure of power by the military in Gabon follows the coup that took place in Niger on July 26.
