The European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs wants member states to exceed the target of training 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers and reach 40,000 by the end of the year.
“We have already managed to train more than 25,000 people [militares] and we will achieve the goal of reaching 30,000 soldiers trained by October. But we need to do more and do it faster, so I proposed to Member States to increase this [a formação] to 40,000 by the end of the year,” announced the head of European diplomacyat a joint press conference with the Spanish defense minister in Toledo, following an informal meeting of EU leaders on the defense portfolio.
About 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers receive training in Toledo.
Josep Borrell added that he is hopeful that the Thursday 27 informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, also in Toledo, will reach a political agreement on the creation of an aid fund of €5 billion per year, which will be included in the European Peace Support Mechanism (MEAP) and is a “key element in contributing to Ukraine’s security”.
This program makes five billion euros available annually, which the head of European diplomacy wants to be ‘a ceiling’..
“If we can spend less, that’s great, but I want the five billion [de euros] be the ceiling so that we can go further in our support to Ukraine,” he added.
