Russian troops intercept ‘drones’ in the Russian border area

Russia on Saturday claimed to have intercepted two “drones” (devices without crews) in the Belgorod region, close to the border with Ukraine, in what it described as an attempted “terrorist attack” by Kiev.

“On the morning of September 2, an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack on the territory of the Russian Federation using unmanned aerial vehicles was halted,” the defense ministry said.

“Two Ukrainian drones were intercepted over the territory of the Belgorod region,” the ministry added, quoted by Russia’s official TASS agency.

The Belgorod region, whose capital of the same name is about 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, borders the Kharkov region, in eastern Ukraine.

In May, Belgorod was the target of raids by alleged groups of Russian volunteers who claimed to be fighting alongside Ukrainian troops.

Moscow also claimed on Saturday to have repelled a new attack by three naval drones in the Black Sea, which allegedly targeted the bridge connecting the Crimean peninsula to Russia.

The bridge, commissioned by President Vladimir Putin after the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula in 2014, has been the target of repeated attacks by Ukrainian forces.

An attack in July caused extensive damage to the road section of the bridge, which is used to transport military equipment for the Russian army fighting in Ukraine.

In October 2022, the explosion of a truck, which Moscow attributed to the Ukrainian secret services, caused significant damage to the bridge, which was closed for some time for repairs.

The 18 kilometer long concrete bridge consists of two parallel structures, one reserved for road traffic and the other for rail traffic.

Crimea itself is also a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks, including an attack in August that destroyed a Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system, according to Kiev.

British military intelligence said in a daily report on the war on Friday that Russia was tightening security measures around the strategic bridge over the Kerch Strait.

“Russia uses a range of passive defenses such as smoke generators and underwater barriers, in addition to active defenses such as air defense systems” to protect infrastructure, the British experts said.

The measures are aimed at protecting the bridge and the ferries that transport troops and weapons to Ukraine, she added.

Russia joined Crimea with the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporijia, which it annexed after invading Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Ukraine and the wider international community do not recognize Russian sovereignty in the five regions.

Kiev demands the withdrawal of Russian troops from all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea.

It also believes that restrictions on the use of Western weapons on Russian territory should not apply to areas under Russian occupation, as they belong to Ukraine.

Western allies supply weapons to Ukraine, provided they are not used on the territory of the Russian Federation.

Kiev’s allies also issued economic sanctions against Moscow to try to reduce its ability to finance the war effort.

Information released by Ukraine and Russia in the course of the war cannot immediately be independently verified.
