Two people have died and another two are missing in Spain due to the heavy rains that have hit different parts of the country since Saturday night, the authorities reported Monday.
Spain is under the influence of an “isolated high-level depression”, known as DANA, which kept a large part of the country on alert on Sunday due to torrential rains, with a yellow weather warning (the third most serious) still being active in the regions of Madrid and Castilla La Mancha.
The two deaths confirmed by the authorities occurred in Toledo, in the Castilla La Mancha region.
One of the victims died in a car swept away by water and the other in an elevator, Spanish authorities said.
The torrential rains, which intensified since Sunday afternoon, have already caused thousands of incidents across the country, especially floods that forced the rescue of dozens of people from cars and houses.
The rain also caused cuts in the circulation of trains and the cancellation of a soccer match in the Spanish First League, between Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla.
The circulation of trains has already been restored on practically all lines, but disturbances and delays persist, according to reports by the companies that operate in Spain and the company responsible for infrastructures (Adif).
The main disturbances in the trains occurred in the so-called “Mediterranean corridor”, where circulation stopped on Sunday, affecting connections between cities such as Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante or Seville.
Rail connections between Madrid and various cities were also interrupted and some remain suspended, such as medium and long-distance trains to or from the Spanish capital.
The DANA will continue to influence the weather in Spain in the next few hours, maintaining the rain forecasts in various regions.
