The European Commission warned on Monday of the “real danger” of the return of packs of wolves to areas of the European Union (EU) from which they were absent and wants measures to be applied to prevent attacks on livestock.
“The concentration of wolf packs in some European regions has become a real danger for livestock and, potentially, also for humans,” said the president of the community executive, Ursula von der Leyen, in a statement.
Von der Leyen also called on “local and national authorities to take action when necessary”, in line with European legislation, which provides for, for example, the construction of fences.
This Monday, Brussels also launched an invitation to local authorities and all interested parties to send, before the 22nd, updated data on the wolf population and its impact.
Based on the data collected, the Commission will decide on the need to present a new proposal on the protection status of the wolf and update the legal framework.
The Iberian wolf is a species classified as “endangered” in Portugal and strictly protected by national legislation.
