At least four people died Monday due to heavy rains in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, authorities said.
According to the local press, more than 350 people were displaced at a time when the Civil Defense issued an “alert for floods, flooding of streams, gradual flooding of rivers and landslides” for the next 24 hours.
In a statement, the National Institute of Meteorology of Brazil predicted that the rains will remain intense in various areas of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and that “the accumulated amount of rain can reach 100 millimeters in 24 hours with winds of up to 100 kilometers /hour”.
For Tuesday, the extratropical cyclone is expected to affect the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.
