Greece issues alerts for a strong storm in the center of the country that left one dead

The Greek authorities on Tuesday prohibited the transit of vehicles in the city of Volos and in the neighboring mountainous region of Pilion, in the center of the country, due to a strong storm that hit the area and caused one death.

The ban, which covers all vehicles except emergency services and roadside assistance, will remain in effect until the storm passes, police said.

Firefighters announced that a man was killed in Volos when a wall collapsed and another man was reported missing after being swept away by floodwaters.

Authorities also sent alerts to mobile phones in other areas of central Greece, the Sporades islands and the island of Evia, warning people to limit their movements due to the storm.

Meteorological services say 650-700mm of rain is forecast for the Pilion region between Tuesday and Wednesday, while 550-600mm is forecast for the central Greek town of Karditsa.

The meteorological service reported that the average annual precipitation in the capital of the Athens region is about 400 millimeters.

This climatic phenomenon occurs after the large forest fires that have hit Greece in recent weeks and have caused more than twenty deaths.
