At least 21 people have died due to heavy rains in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, local authorities said Tuesday.
“With great sadness we received the news that with the drop in the water level, hundreds of people were rescued. But now I receive the information that 15 corpses were found in the municipality of Muçum, which causes us immense pain and increases ” The death toll went from six to 21,” said Governor Eduardo Leite, quoted by AFP, adding that “this is the highest death toll ever seen in a climate disaster in the region.”
What is at stake is the passage of an extratropical cyclone. Authorities say more than 52,000 people were affected and more than 3,000 people displaced.
On Monday, the National Institute of Meteorology of Brazil predicted, in a statement, that the rains will continue to be intense in various areas of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and that “the accumulated amount of rain can reach 100 millimeters in 24 hours with strong winds up to 100 km/h”.
